Shortly after the post, many netizens shared their thoughts on the reason why LE SSERAFIM and NewJeans debuted in the same year. Some of the comments included, “Both groups are from different companies lol HYBE happens to own Source Music and ADOR.”
LE SSERAFIM debuted on May 2 with the release of “Fearless” which sold over 175,000 copies. On May 10, eight days after their debut, the group won their first music show win on SBS MTV’s “The Show”.
On May 20, in light of the increasing allegations of bullying against member Kim Garam , HYBE Corporation and Source Music issued a joint statement announcing that he will be taking a hiatus due to pending investigations and that LE SSERAFIM will be temporarily promoting as a five member group in the meantime. On July 20, HYBE Corporation and Source Music announced that Kim Garam would be leaving the group and that his contract had been terminated. They apologized for the inconvenience caused by the scandal and confirmed that LE SSERAFIM will continue as a five-member group.
Meanwhile NewJeans released the music video for their pre-debut single “Attention” on July 22 as a surprise release, with no promotions or prior information about the group’s lineup. The video, which garnered more than 1.3 million views in less than 24 hours, was followed by the announcement of the four-track “NewJeans” extended play (EP) from NewJeans. On July 23, the group’s second single “Hype Boy” was released along with a 50-second clip revealing the names of the members, followed by four other music videos for the song, specifically for the members’ perspectives.
” LE SSERAFIM should debut now because some of the members are from IZ*ONE and Min Hee Jin thinks that NewJeans should debut now. I agree that NewJeans songs give a summer vibe,” commented netter. ” HYBE has 6 or 7 labels lol. There’s no way HYBE can coordinate all of them,” said another. ” I personally think HYBE is trying to be a trendsetter not aiming to be an untested top. Yes, it feels like HYBE has the ambition to create a trend for 4th generation idols,” concluded another.
